“Y’all need to start respecting the producers a little more, big or small.” - Sonny Digital
Sonny Digital a well known modern day hip hop music producer recently made his appearance on the Producer Grind Podcast in which he had a lot to say about how he feels that producers are being treated unfairly in the music industry. He said he thinks musicians should all get together and create a union to help give protection and power back to the Music Producer. I just want to talk a little bit about it and give my opinion on the whole thing, if you haven't already watch the interview check it out: here.
1. It Won't Be Easy
In order to unionize you have to organize and everybody has to be on the same page. Just like with any company that has employees that try to unionize there will be a lot of resistance at first but it is something that has to happen so music producers get the respect they deserve. Everybody who wants to be apart of it has to stand firm with what the union stands for and cant stray no matter what. For example if we start telling record labels that we want a bigger front end or else we wont cooperate and we wont budge we have to do just that, not budge otherwise that one person who does who is already part of the union will make everybody looks bad and they wont take us seriously.
2. We Need Co-Signs At First
Sonny Digital is a pretty big name to co-sign a producers union but there will have to be more and they will have to be loyal too the union as well. If we had Sonny Digital, Metro Boomin, Mike Will Made It, etc all part of the union then you already know it will be more official in the eyes of others and in the industry. So we need more producers to back it up that are well respected and are on top to help it grow at the start otherwise who is really going to take it serious?
3. No Risk, No Reward
Sure in the beginning there will be a lot of people in this dirty cut throat industry who may not want to work with producers that are following a strict code of conduct that have the correct representation to make sure they are being treated with respect, but that's to be expected when you learn your worth and others won't like that. We have to realize that unless we do this then music producers are going to be treated unfairly forever and its not until we decide that we deserve more that we will get it. Imagine a world where a producer's union is fighting for producers to get paid on time, plus some insurance coverage would be nice too.
So now picture a world where a bad contract is seen a mile away because we have people in our union who know what to look for and the help is there, always to back you up. I can keep going on and on but think about how it could be and how it is now and its not hard to see why unionizing for music producers is a great opportunity and it should be done in my opinion sooner rather than later!
