Despite the fact that we are living in an age where a profession in music is still considered unorthodox or just plain crazy by the people around us, I feel like its important to protect ourselves as musicians and be knowledgeable in our craft so I have put together this list of 5 must have books for any and all upcoming Rappers & Music Producers. These 5 books should help you not only to inform you about the journey you are embarking on but also inform you of the types of people and situations you may encounter in this "cut-throat" industry. I really wish I had these books at my disposal when I started so I hope you appreciate the information i'm passing down to you!
Here are 5 excellent books I recommend you add to your arsenal to stay extra sharp:
Without a doubt this book by Robert Greene is one of if not my favorite when it comes to day to day life when dealing with people in this industry and just life in general. If manipulating people is not your thing then that's ok its not mine either but this is still a good read because I think everybody should at the very least be knowledgeable about the manipulations people may use against you in everyday life so you can prepare a good defense if and when the opportunity ever presents itself.
If your like me and want to learn what exactly makes a hit record and why certain things stick better than others than this book might be the one for you. In this book you analyze why certain things within music theory are just perceived as more enjoyable to the listener and also why certain things aren't as pleasing. With this information in this book you will definitely be better geared to making that hit record.
If your at the stage in your career where your making great music and are knowledgeable on the situations and people you may come across in this industry (i.e. the last two books I recommended) but cant seem to gain traction as far as awareness for your music goes then its about time to start focusing on marketing. This book by Seth Godin is perfect for the D.I.Y Rapper or Music Producer trying to stand out from the crowd and make his/her own lane!
If your ready to eat the apple from the tree in the Garden of Eden and want to know what exactly differentiates a successful Musician from a regular every day basement Rapper or Producer than The Secret is the book you need. In this book you'll learn the key difference between the top dogs and the chihuahuas in this industry.
Once your ready to learn the legal side of things than I consider checking out this book here by Donald S. Passman. Music Law is one of the most cloudy topics ever and I remember when I first started I didn't know where to begin but this book definitely helps break down everything you need to know in an easy to understand format. Anything you want to know, its here!
In addition to these five books, i'd be curious to hear what you all have on your reading lists as well. Leave a comment down below and let everybody know what books your reading that could potentially help them on there journey!
